Campaign Story

Today in our country having as many children out of school as it currently has is a threat to the future of Nigeria, both in terms of its long-term security and its overall health indices.

As of this year, it is estimated that there are more than 20 million Nigerian children who are out of school.

This is by far the largest such number of school children in the world many of whom are not doing anything useful other than assisting their parents in their various petty trading activities or their subsistence farms.

Many others veer off into petty crimes from which they eventually graduate to become murderers and kidnappers for ransom. According to the UNICEF (The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund)

there are “far too many Nigerian children today who are not in the classroom – and for those who are, far too many are not getting a solid education.

And up to 35 per cent of the total have never entered a classroom. In the third decade of the 21st century, this is a terrible burden for any nation to shoulder.

Here are several other reasons why children may not be in school. Some of these challenges are often due to unsafe and inadequate infrastructure, including poorly equipped classrooms, insufficient furniture,

and lack of proper water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. There are schools, for example without roofs leaving the children at the mercy of the elements. These contribute to keeping children out of school.

Such evidence of insufficient investment in education affects the quality of schools and accessibility of schooling.
